He was familiar with the look of fear. It was an emotion he'd seen many times before. In his clan brothers during heated fights, in his own father and mother…
Nothing good could come from secrets. He'd decided that when he agreed to come over. Gone was the usual casual attitude that he carried around, the easiness which he could let things slide off his broad shoulders.
"We're attracted to each other," he said simply. Her eyebrows shot up as she reeled backwards, but the fear turned to excitement. He could feel it. His nostrils flared. It was becoming hard to tame the beast inside him, the animal that yelled out for carnal desires to be satisfied. If there was a willing mate, why not?
Not the time, he told himself.
"You think me calling you handsome means I like you?" she asked. He tried to smother the grin that was arising on his face.
"I can smell it," he told her. "On both of us." She shivered. They were close. Too close. He reached out towards her and she didn't move away. His warm hand touched her slim wrist. Sparks shocked them. He heard her sharp intake of breath as her gaze focused on him. "I can feel it. I know you can, too."
"So what if I find you handsome," she said. "We're adults. Aren't we?" There was a hint of something underneath her dejected tone. Disappointment? Anticipated rejection? He pushed forward. He had a mission.
"We are," he admitted. "A human woman and a wolf Shifter. Not exactly a likely match. I don't understand the way humans couple themselves. In my clan, we don't bother fighting the attraction. As soon as the smell is in the air, we talk about it. Frankly."
"Like now," she said with a bite of bitter laughter. "How delightfully romantic."
His thumb brushed over her wrist, feeling the life pumping through her veins. The animal inside begged for the conversation to stop. Some things were better started without asking. He shoved down that thought. That wasn't how humans weren't meant to behave.
"I've tried to stay away from you," he said.
"Why?"
"I could ask you the same thing," he told her.
"I reached out," she corrected. "I invited you to dinner!" She gestured to the spread that they'd abandoned for a tense conversation.
He arched one eyebrow. "Aunt Becky had nothing to do with that?"
Her cheeks grew pink. "Well, I mean, she may have suggested it-"
"I need to talk to you about something more than attraction," he told her. "I'm not trying to argue about that. I'm attracted to you. I won't lie."
Her doe-like eyes grew wider than ever. He drew his hand back again lightly. She massaged the area, as if missing his touch.
"What is it?" Her voice was small, weaker than he'd ever heard it.
"Piper," he said. He smelled her scent spike in fear. He placed a warm hand on her cold arm. She didn't pull away. "Piper is my daughter, Karen."
"What?" First, she shook her head. "No, that can't be. It was an anonymous donation.
